Zombie

It had to be a surreal scene for Miami residents who were horrified enough to have witnessed it. Were they watching a taping of an episode of Day of the Living Dead, or could this terrible vision actually be playing out in real life. Near the site of the Miami Herald newspaper, 31 year old Rudy Eugene pulled down and then stripped clothes off of a 65 year old homeless gentleman, Ronald Poppo. The attack became more horrendous though, when it became clear that Eugene, in a zombie like state, was eating Poppo’s flesh from his face. Like watching something straight off the silver screen, a true like zombie like attack was taking place smack dab in the heart of Miami. Perhaps that is why onlookers that happened by did not do anything. In fact, a CBS Newsreport indicated that building cameras from the newspaper caught the attack, but also something just as shocking. Cars passed by, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians, none of them stopping to help the gentleman or trying to contact the authorities. Instead, it was not until Larry Vega happened to ride his bike off the causeway and saw the attack, that something was done. What he saw when he got there was simply unreal. In the same CBS News piece, Vega said, “The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, Get off! The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin.” When it became clear that he could not stop the crazed Eugene, he summoned a passing Miami police officer. The officer got out of his car and approached the amateur cannibal in action. He ordered Eugene to stop what he was doing, but the man offered nothing more than a glance to the officer. He then gave him a growl like an eating animal, and returned to his prey. The stunned officer had not choice but to unload a round into the assailant. In true movie fashion, the shot did little to stop the attacker from feasting on his victim. The officer unloaded a second bullet, this time killing Eugene in the process. Ronald Poppo was still alive, but left in critical condition. What one police spokesman found when he arrived is almost beyond belief. Sgt. Armando Aguilar was quoted in the above piece as saying, “He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose, no mouth. In my opinion, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” The last line seems to paint the picture for Mr. Poppo, but what caused Eugene to go zombie on the older homeless man? It is pure speculation at this point, but police suspect that he might have been under the influence of an LSD type drug, possibly explaining why he was not in his right mind. It might also explain how he got shot once, but never flinched from eating. Toxicology tests were taken, but results are not know as of yet.
